An earthworks RAMS must cover the temporary-works design for slopes and benches (signed off by a Temporary Works Coordinator), mobile-plant interaction with personnel (segregation, banksman, eye contact rules), slope stability monitoring during the works, dust suppression in dry conditions, noise impact for nearby receptors, contaminated-land controls where ground conditions warrant (CLR11 / EA guidance), and a clear traffic-management plan for haul routes and tipping areas.
HSE data is consistent: most earthworks fatalities involve mobile plant striking pedestrians, not trench collapse. Excavators, dumpers and dozers operating in close proximity to ground operatives is the highest-consequence risk on any earthworks site. A RAMS that focuses on excavation depth and shoring without addressing the plant-interface controls, banksman discipline, and segregation distances is missing the primary mechanism of injury.
