While anyone can write the RAMS document, the work described must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. The RAMS should confirm Gas Safe registration and specify the ACS (Accredited Certification Scheme) categories held by the engineer performing the work.

On construction sites, yes — the principal contractor will require RAMS. For standalone domestic work, RAMS demonstrate competence and are increasingly expected by clients and warranty providers. Gas Safe itself recommends documented risk assessments for all gas work.

Certain gas work must be notified to Gas Safe within a specified timeframe. Your RAMS should include a step for notification and completion of the appropriate Gas Safe documentation (benchmark commissioning checklist, warning labels, etc.).

RAMS as a single document is not named in UK law, but the underlying duties are.
