A self-employed Gas Safe registered plumber is replacing a 12-year-old combi boiler in a 4th-floor flat with no lift access. Two-day job: day one strip-out and pipework alterations, day two new boiler installation, commissioning and benchmarking.

Common Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

1. Gas Safe registration recorded as 'yes' rather than the number

Why it fails: A tick-box doesn't satisfy GSIUR. The Gas Safe number is the verifiable evidence of competence — and HSE will check it.

Fix: Capture the Gas Safe number, the qualifications held (CCN1, CENWAT, etc.) and the registration expiry. Verify on the Gas Safe Register before starting work.

2. No COSHH assessment for flux and solvents

Why it fails: Flux contains zinc chloride; solvent cement releases tetrahydrofuran vapour. COSHH Reg 6 requires each to be assessed. Generic 'use according to manufacturer's instructions' isn't a COSHH assessment.

Fix: Reference COSHH assessments by substance in the RAMS. Cover ventilation, glove type, eye protection, and disposal.

3. No customer notification or vulnerable-occupant check

Why it fails: Gas work in occupied properties affects occupants. Failing to identify vulnerable occupants (elderly, infants, medical-equipment users) before isolating supply is a recurring failing.
