FROM DETAILS TO DOCUMENT

Your first document. Three simple steps.

Start with the details you know. See your document before you sign up.

  1. 01

    Summarise the electrical task

Say whether the work involves installation, inspection, testing or maintenance. Add the setting and an important restriction so the document starts with the right job context.

  2. 02

Confirm the safe system of work

Have a competent person check the proposed content against the system, isolation arrangements, equipment and site rules. Resolve unknowns before approving the method for use.

  3. 03

    Save and share your PDF

Electrical work, properly described

Keep the task, system and site arrangements together

A lighting installation and an inspection visit need different information. Your RAMS should make the actual scope clear before the reviewer reaches the method statement.

HSE — Electrical systems in buildings
01

Task and system boundaries

Identify the installation, equipment and limits of the work. Distinguish installation, inspection, testing and maintenance tasks, and show where adjacent systems remain in use so the reviewer can check those interfaces.

02

Isolation and electrical hazards

Record the competent person’s arrangements for establishing safe working conditions. Reflect the actual system and authorised procedure, including relevant alternative supplies or stored energy; a switch position alone does not establish safety.

03

Competence and responsibilities

Identify responsibility for planning, supervision and the electrical work, including authorisations and limits. Confirm competence for the particular system and task, rather than assuming a general qualification covers every activity.

04

Test equipment and tools

Describe the equipment and checks relevant to the task. Use product instructions, equipment condition and the competent person’s assessment to inform the method, with appropriate references for the test equipment selected.

05

Occupied premises and other trades

Include planned shutdowns, access restrictions and communication with the occupier. Record coordination and handover arrangements, so the site team understands which connected services will be affected and what must remain available.

06

Work sequence and site risks

Bring the electrical method together with relevant access, handling, dust and neighbouring-work risks. Include emergency contacts and handover arrangements, with a sequence that matches the task the crew is authorised to perform.

For electrical contractors and maintenance teams

Make the electrical scope clear before the job starts

Electrical RAMS are useful when a facilities manager or principal contractor needs to understand what your team will do and how it will affect the site. Riskora gives you a structured starting point in minutes, ready to refine for a commercial installation, inspection visit, refurbishment or planned maintenance task.

Electrical safe working depends on the system and the people undertaking the work. HSE guidance emphasises appropriate planning, competence and safe isolation. Use the document to record the arrangements confirmed for your job; a generated method cannot establish the condition of an installation or authorise work on it.

  • Identify the task and equipment instead of using a broad description such as electrical works.
  • Mention shutdown constraints, occupied areas and any coordination required with the client or facilities team.
  • Check available system information and confirm the authorised working arrangements with the responsible competent person.
  • Review the final scope, equipment, access arrangements and handover requirements before briefing the team.

A FEW THINGS, ANSWERED

Electrical RAMS questions.

Practical answers before you start your first document.

Can I create RAMS for installation, testing or maintenance?

Yes. State the precise activity in the brief, then review the risks and method for that activity. Installation, periodic inspection and fault-finding can involve different hazards and controls. The competent person should confirm that the finished document matches the actual system and work being undertaken.

Does an electrical RAMS make live work acceptable?

No. Creating paperwork does not authorise live work. HSE advises avoiding live electrical work where possible and using competent people and appropriate safe working procedures. Any proposal involving electrical danger needs its own competent assessment and the applicable legal requirements must be met.

HSE — Electrical systems in buildings
Which guidance should the reviewer use?

HSG85 covers safe working practices on or near electrical equipment. GS38 addresses electrical test equipment used on low-voltage systems. The reviewer should also use the current requirements, equipment instructions and site procedures relevant to the job, rather than treating a generic reference list as approval.

HSE — Electricity at work: safe working practices (HSG85)
What should I add for an occupied building?

Describe the work area, permitted working times and the people who will remain nearby. Confirm arrangements for interruptions, access and communication with the occupier. If a shutdown affects other services, have the responsible people establish the necessary arrangements and reflect those decisions in the document.

Will a client or principal contractor accept the RAMS?

Riskora produces a professional document you can review and submit. Acceptance depends on the client’s requirements and whether the assessment and method suit the work. Check their submission criteria, resolve comments and obtain the necessary review before starting; no document builder can promise acceptance for every site.
